As we slowly close the book on this school year, I look back with a great sense of accomplishment as well as a tremendous feeling of excited anticipation to the future.
This past year we implemented our new K to 8th grade curriculum map for math and ELA. After two years of development our Wellness policy was adopted along with a series of healthy changes in practice and behavior. We readied ourselves for the new state Smarter Balanced test and our students performed admirably. Additionally, we implemented our three times a year assessment system for math, reading and writing. In technology we expanded with the purchase of 36 new iPads and 20 Chromebooks. We also reorganized the library services to include a media specialist and library aid. We implemented the new teacher evaluation program and we will again be offering a summer school program to 30 of our students from kindergarten to grade 5.
Together with and for our Glenburn community we offered a variety of health services created to help those in need. This year we had over 150 people participate in our Flu Shot Clinic as well as 86 students that received complete round of dental care from Tooth Protectors. We also set up an overnight shelter for our townspeople during two of this past winters worst nights with no power. Our Weekend Back Pack Program sent meals home each weekend to those students who qualified for free or reduced lunch and were not being fed during these two days.
Mrs McLaughlin was selected as the Penobscot County Teacher of the Year for 2016. Mrs. Leavitt and Mrs. Berry will be attending a science leadership symposium in Houston, Texas. Erin Porter will be working as a Teaching Fellow in Acadia National Park and Robyn Hernandez received her masters degree in Educational Leadership.
Our boys basketball team won the 2105 PVML Championship. The girls team lost their PVML championship bid and took second place as our STEM Club were awarded 3rd place in the state Science Olympiad.
Glenburn is a vibrant place of high expectations which is why for the second year in a row Glenburn is ranked as one of the top ten public schools in the entire state of Maine.
