To: Glenburn School Parent and Guardians From: Richard Modery, Superintendent of the Glenburn School Department RE: Welcome to the 2023-2024 School Year Date: August 25, 2023 Welcome Back: It’s hard to believe that the last full week of summer break is ending. I hope your family has enjoyed time over the summer with lots of fun and laughter. We’re looking forward to welcoming staff on Monday, August 28th and Tuesday, 29th for opening day workshops. What we’re really excited about is our first student day on Wednesday, August 30th. Arrival: All Students: Student drop off begins at 7:45 with staff on duty to cover an AM recess or breakfast. Buses will drop off out front at 8:00 with breakfast students going to the cafeteria and all other students reporting to their classrooms. The following exceptions will be made for the first week. PreK-Grade 5 • For the first week all Pre-K through fifth grade students will report to the gym where their teacher will gather them starting at 8:00 and bring them to the classroom at 8:15(ish). We’ll be flexible for the first week to ensure students get where they need to go with limited stress. Grades 6-8 • All sixth through eighth grade students will follow the typical procedure with staff available to direct them where they need to go as needed. Once we get in the swing of things students will start reporting to their homeroom at 8:00 with students arriving after 8:15 being tardy. Our goal will be to start genuine instructional time at 8:20 for all students. Dismissal: Student dismissal will start at 2:35 with buses lining up in the bus route in the front of the building and parent pickup happening in the multi-lane loop near the main entrance. Please be patient with this process for the first few weeks as it’s likely to take a bit longer than usual. The goal during dismissal is to ensure student, staff, and community member safety throughout the process. Once the kinks get worked out the dismissal process typically takes about 10-15 minutes. Nutrition Services: We’ll be providing breakfast and lunch every day in the cafeteria this year. We’re happy to report that all breakfast and lunch meals will be at no cost to the families during the 2023-2024 school year. It remains important that families complete the “Free and Reduced Priced Meal Application” (Bright Green) that will come home on the first day of school. The data collected from this form is tied directly to our school’s funding from the Maine Department of Education. We know it seems unnecessary given that no funds are collected for lunch but a lack of completion can result in a significant loss of state funding. Your assistance with completing the form will benefit the entire Glenburn community. As always, if you have any concerns please don’t hesitate to reach out to your child’s teacher, the school office, or the superintendent’s office at your convenience. The best way to make initial contact with a teacher during the school day is by email as they are busy with students and likely unable to take a phone call. We’re looking forward to a wonderful and productive 2023-2024 school year! With gratitude and excitement Richard Modery Superintendent Glenburn School moderyr@glenburnschool.us 207-942-4405
